Cognitive Functional Capacity Evaluation (CogFCE)

Assessment of functional cognitive abilities and performance in relation to work and occupational demands.

What is a Cognitive Functional Capacity Evaluation?

A Cognitive Functional Capacity Evaluation (CogFCE) is a structured occupational therapy assessment examining how cognitive abilities influence functional performance, particularly in relation to work and everyday occupational demands.

Benchmark Occupational Therapy provides independent Cognitive Functional Capacity Evaluations in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Assessments examine areas such as attention, memory, information processing, planning, organization, problem-solving, and executive functioning, with an emphasis on how these abilities are applied during functional and work-related activities.

Findings are integrated with clinical observations, standardized assessments where appropriate, and simulated functional tasks to identify demonstrated abilities, limitations, and potential implications for work participation, accommodations, and rehabilitation planning.

When May a Cognitive FCE Be Appropriate?

A Cognitive FCE may be useful when cognitive symptoms or limitations may be affecting work capacity, but their functional impact requires further clarification.

Typical referral situations may include:

  • Clarifying current cognitive work abilities and limitations

  • Supporting return-to-work or rehabilitation planning

  • Evaluating the functional impact of difficulties with attention, memory, organization, planning, or executive functioning

  • Assessing the ability to manage complex, multi-step, or competing work demands

  • Comparing functional cognitive performance with known occupational demands

  • Identifying potential workplace accommodations, task modifications, or compensatory strategies

  • Providing updated functional information when cognitive work capacity remains unclear

What the Assessment May Include

Assessment components are selected according to the individual, the purpose of the assessment, and the cognitive and occupational demands being evaluated.

Depending on the circumstances, the assessment may include standardized cognitive measures, functional cognitive tasks, administrative or work-simulation activities, structured multi-step tasks, observation of task approach and strategy use, and assessment of performance over time.

Attention & Concentration
Ability to maintain, divide, and shift attention while completing relevant tasks.

Memory & Information Management
Ability to retain, recall, organize, and apply information required for task completion.

Executive Functioning
Planning, prioritizing, problem-solving, decision-making, self-monitoring, and adapting to changing demands.

Organization & Task Management
Ability to organize materials and information, sequence activities, manage multiple tasks, and meet task requirements.

Pace, Accuracy & Endurance
Speed and efficiency of performance, error rate, sustained cognitive effort, and changes in performance over time.

Work Simulation
Representative administrative, cognitive, or occupation-related tasks may be used to examine functional performance under demands resembling those encountered in work.

Functional Work Simulation

Where appropriate, structured work simulation is used to evaluate cognitive performance within realistic task demands rather than relying solely on standardized cognitive measures.

Simulated activities may involve reviewing and organizing information, scheduling, responding to written instructions, prioritizing competing tasks, identifying errors, managing interruptions, completing documentation, or other activities selected to reflect relevant occupational demands.

Performance may be considered in relation to task completion, accuracy, efficiency, strategy use, organization, response to increasing complexity, and ability to sustain performance over time.

Reporting & Recommendations

Following the assessment, findings are summarized in a detailed occupational therapy report describing the individual's demonstrated cognitive-functional abilities in relation to the occupational demands being evaluated.

Reporting may address functional strengths and limitations, task accuracy and efficiency, strategy use, organization, response to increasing complexity, consistency and sustainability of performance, and comparison with available occupational demands.

Recommendations are provided as appropriate and may address return-to-work planning, workplace accommodation, compensatory strategies, task modification, rehabilitation planning, or further assessment.
